Never In my life would I say cancer was easy but life after remission gets a lot harder than it was before I was diagnosed. I have the unique perspective of being a teenager when I was sick so I grew up faster than I would have liked. I sadly did not survive my battle with out a few battle scars. I had a brain tumor that was removed from the area around my cerebellum. If you know anything about that area of the brain than you might assume I have very poor balance and you would be correct. My new walk has been described as more of a waddle like you would see from a duck. I can barely walk a straight line or stand on one foot without falling on my face. I’ll talk in further detail about all of that depressing stuff later but I really wanted to talk about my best friend through all of my cancer treatment my mother. I was recently talking to a friend of mine and I mentioned my mother is my best friend and I realize a lot of children don’t have the same relationship as I do with my mom and in someways I understand it. Your mom is supposed to set rules and love you unconditionally but my mom did so much more. When I was first diagnosed we had just moved to North Carolina. I was just getting settled in at my new school so I didn’t have a lot of close friends yet. So not only did my mom have the job of caring for my health but also being the person I was with 24/7 and I could talk to about anything I might be thinking about. She was my movie watching buddy and therapist everything in one person.
My relationship with my dad has always been complicated but I don’t think he really realizes how much appreciation I have for him. Everything he did for me making sure I always had something to look forward to really helped me keep going. I have always felt a certain pressure to impress him more than anyone else in my life. We butt heads a lot but the moments we just sit and talk are some of my favorite.
